FOSS can genuinely be an extremely liberating thing.

Focus on that. Don't focus on attacking people, don't focus on foaming at the mouth, and don't focus on seeing Microsoft as a threat. They will not benefit you, they potentially harm the person that they are directed towards, and they certainly do not cause that person to be more receptive to the idea of potentially adopting Linux themselves.

More than anything else, get rid of your fear. Stop being afraid of Microsoft; Linux users truthfully have nothing to fear from that company at all.

Microsoft are their own worst enemy, but by going down to their level, the Linux community becomes its' own worst enemy as well.Mirshalakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04223199207262646414noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33801994.post-16393339941199751572009-03-27T06:20:00.000-06:002009-03-27T06:20:00.000-06:00You were in the right however this teacher wants t...You were in the right however this teacher wants to label it as her ignorant and arrogant attitude toward respecting a student finally caught up with her. To err is human and forgive divine but imagine how many years she's been in the practice? If that's the case how many children has she led down the mandatory Windows issues without fully using and disclosing Linux as an Operating system if she admits to using Linux then she knows more about then she lets out. In the bare bones structure and format you were right.

A teacher who proves that her close minded ethics finally caught up with her isn't just overly zealous she's the reasons why Linux has the troubled card of becoming a coffee table norm for computer users. Her issue stems from knowing the topic, having used Linux, and then saying just as easily that it's not free. Teachers like that make me disgusted with what educational and learning techniques they spread to the masses. Perhaps, someday we'll be punching that big red time clock for Bill Gates and she'll have helped delivering us from computer usage independence toward which operating system we use; no apologizes you did the right thing with what you wrote.Papa Bear Gamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05105419088273524040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33801994.post-39878630508806968742009-03-20T10:33:00.000-06:002009-03-20T10:33:00.000-06:00Here in Sweden this kind of action is called a "ma...Here in Sweden this kind of action is called a "making a poodle". I posted a comment on your first post agreeing with your anger when I myself felt the same. Being so technologically-adept, I often forget that the rest of the world is not the same. I can't tell you how many times I have been asked a tech question, start babbling on in esoteric terms as a response and get looked at as if I have three heads! This post reminded me of how excited I was about Windows back when that was the most easily-available option (with only early MacOS as the other -- Linux was not easily available or workable and especially not for beginners as I would've been). Even my mother uses Linux on one of her computers now with my guidance. I'm sure advertising plays a huge part in that how are you to know that Linux even exists when no one you know knows of it and you don't even think another OS is available besides MacOS let alone thinking to search for another option. I understand now that it seems she was doing what any person would've probably done in her position. Hey, if someone in class was idiot enough to whip out a Girls Gone Wild disk last week, why should this week be different? I would've done the same thing. I do hope she gives Linux a try -- even if her first taste of it was probably a bit biting (from her perspective, I imagine). We can really be a very supportive and moral group of Linux users when what we're doing is not being accused of being illegal. Please understand that many of us jump through so many hoops to stay in the right that when accused of not legal activities, it bothers us greatly and invalidates our efforts. Cheers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33801994.post-18940503374640040422009-01-04T02:26:00.000-06:002009-01-04T02:26:00.000-06:00Wow, my 16 year old son just sent me a link to bot...Wow, my 16 year old son just sent me a link to both of the log items related to Karen and her e-mail to you about Linux etc. My first reaction was "I have to find her!". I am a tech teacher and IT Director for a small private school system in Oakland, Michigan. We have a computer for every student. Some have desktops and others have notebooks...

We are for the most part a Mickeysoft house but I've been working on making the move to open source for going on 3 years now. Every Windoze system has Firefox, Open Office and several other open source apps. We also have about 1/3 of our student systems running Ubuntu Linux 8.10.

Having said all that, I can't believe a "teacher" would send a message like that to anyone. Regardless of the follow up you posted about how sorry she was and how great of a job the school system is doing, it amazes me that a person like this is teaching our kids. To be so close minded about anything without having done any research should be illegal.

I honestly can't stand 90% of the teachers my own kids have because they are idiots and prove it to us just like this teacher did by sending you that message. Educated? Certified? Yes, but idiots no matter how you look at it. It really enrages me to think that these paper empowered pro's are "educating" our kids. No wonder our schools are cranking out kids that can't get jobs. We don't teach them anything valuable or actually usable in the real world.

What a nightmare we are creating for our own future...

Jon Foster.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10322682629575948440noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33801994.post-9192845198274295462009-01-02T21:05:00.000-06:002009-01-02T21:05:00.000-06:00sugardave said:Oh, please enlighten us, Shill! Trying to teach in overcrowded classrooms an agenda that is dictated by "No Child Left Behind" and it's focus on test scores is brutal. Even worse is the fact that teachers are punching bags for everyone, from students, to parents, to news media, to internet wankers. What many people don't realize is teachers have to be responsible for more subjects than tech. A teacher that isn't a computer specialist has much more ground to cover, therefore investigating new tech has an extremely low importance. They are more interested in having a consistent tool to work with to educate their charges. In the case of my school district, it's Apple. Another thing you might consider is that middle school grades are the most difficult to teach in- maintaining order to teach the ones who come to learn, is a far greater task than many seem to understand. Teachers don't have time to earn the respect of 35 kids and still cover the material, so disruptions have to be dealt with, just so the teacher can get to the mandated curriculum. For some reason, people seem to think that their little Billy is somehow more deserving of the teacher's time than somebody else's kid. These negative comments just show how little people know or care about how hard it is to teach. You have to be educator, surrogate mother, guardian, policeman, guidance counselor... Karen should get cut a little slack for not being a techie. She's got enough on her plate.SteveAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33801994.post-4168668532748190722008-12-30T08:32:00.000-06:002008-12-30T08:32:00.000-06:00I doubt if anyone will get this far down, as I did...I doubt if anyone will get this far down, as I didn't even make it halfway, and I apologize if this point has already been made but I have not the time to read 300(!) comments.

I want to say something to those who still feel outrage that Karen decided to fire off a threatening e-mail instead of having a conversation, why and how is that any different than Ken deciding to post an outraged blog instead of calling Karen and asking how she could believe those things? In either person's case this entire situation would have turned out completely different. I'm guilty of the very same thing, on likely too many occasions, and I believe we should all try harder to change that mentality.

For the record I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for you Ken, you're a greater man than I and I mean no disrespect.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33801994.post-70851145962409494742008-12-30T02:58:00.000-06:002008-12-30T02:58:00.000-06:00I'm going to have to agree with Lizard and Sugarda...I'm going to have to agree with Lizard and Sugardave. Did someone in their IT dept. really say that it is illegal to remove Windows from their computers? This is just unreal!

It is a small example of why kids should be educated about the way Microsoft cons and manipulates people. If kids are going to be using Microsoft products at school, they should know about how MS operates. They should know how MS robs people of their constitutional rights to resell/reuse what they legally paid for (OEM licenses). The students shouldn't have to learn this stuff on their own, fifteen years later (as I did).

IT departments need to start showing students the mouldy side under the cheese, so the students can decide for themselves which direction to go. I am no "Linux fanboy". I'd be happy to see people learning about BSD too.
